A prepositional phrase will begin with a preposition and end with a noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause the object of the preposition.  The object of the preposition might have one or more modifiers to describe it. Therefore, the phrase to the historian Tacitus should be close to what it is describing, letters, which makes  answer choices  B and C incorrect. Also, in two letters to the historian Tacitus should modify the verb wrote.  In options A and D, in two letters to the historian Tacitus seems to be modifying eruption, which is incorrect.  (There are other errors in answer choices  B, C and D as well, but we will stick to the topic at hand.) Option E corrects the prepositional phrase errors by putting the modifier close to the verb wrote, so therefore, E is our answer. Lets try one more: Defense attorneys have occasionally argued that their clients’ misconduct stemmed from a reaction to something ingested, but in attributing criminal or delinquent behavior to some food allergy, the perpetrators are in effect told that they are not responsible for their actions. Answer choices  A, C and E imply that the perpetrators are attributing their own behaviors to food allergies. That is not correct   their defense attorneys are attributing their behavior to food allergies, and hence, all three of these options have modifier errors. This leaves us with B and D. Answer choice  D uses the phrase â€Å"attributed as,† which is grammatically incorrect   the correct usage should be  Ã¢â‚¬Å"X is attributed to Y, rather than X attributed as Y. Therefore, option  B is our  answer. The acronym often used to describe an environment of noise, mess, and doubt is VUCA. These four letters represent volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Its something thats recognizable for many of us in our everyday lives. Perhaps youre managing a complex job with multiple pressures, and much of the day is spent doing a role thats unrecognizable from the one you thought youd signed up to. And maybe this is coupled with the responsibility you feel for your elderly parents who need attention. And your children, who not only want loving and feeding, but also need to visit the dentist and be to their swimming lesson on time. So what comes first? How can you prioritize your precious time? Balancing complex, conflicting priorities With little data to draw on to help us decide, and no metaphorical burning platform to force our decisions, we are left to our own devices. So, youre the one that has to ask yourself and determine: Does that presentation need to be perfect or is 80% good enough? Are swimming lessons that important Do my parents really need to see me that regularly? Its our instincts, our experiences, and our values that help us decide. Most of the time, this works for us. However, holding true to what we feel is important—with integrity to our core values—can be tricky in light of complex social and moral contradictions. And if we try to stick to all our values to the level wed like to, somewhere along the line we are going to break. Particularly when we are under pressure. And especially when we think no one is looking. The danger of hypocrisy The result can be that, the more integrity you want to have, the more you can end up acting like a hypocrite. It is important to note that I use the term hypocrite as one given to such actions, rather than one who is a hypocrite (see  Naso, 2010). So being a hypocrite and acting with hypocrisy are not essentially tied together. The literature tells us that hypocrisy can be useful for conflict resolution and reputation management, but it disregards the moral worth of a person—it doesn’t tell us anything about whether we can trust a person who acts like a hypocrite. This is the important part! Our intentions are not necessarily in the public eye, only what we say and do. As human beings living in a complex world, we are judged by others, especially when they see incongruence between what we’ve said and what we do. Unfortunately, we don’t always get the chance to explain and justify why we’ve done what we’ve done. Our intentions are not necessarily in the public eye, only what we say and do. Moreover, we cannot assume that others will make the cognitive leap to try and understand our intentions. That comes with time, trust, and a relationship of some sort. Only then will others say, Oh, they’ve done THAT because of THIS. Not because they’ve intentionally set out to deceive me for their own gain. This also goes the other way: we judge people on their actions. Only after we have some insight into their character can we begin to understand them. But people only have a few chances—if we see behavior that undermines their values, we begin to think they’re either acting like a hypocrite or they are a hypocrite. As an example, a few years ago, a CEO told me how he came to realize work/life balance was his strongest value. So he set up his business to reflect that way of working. Then, one day, having started very early in the morning to meet a tight deadline, one of his colleagues came in 2.5 hours later than him. Unexpectedly, he felt an angry inner voice ask,  What time do you call this? Feeling like a hypocrite, he realized then that his strongest value was in fact fairness, with work/life balance stemming from this. His colleague coming in much later than him had felt unfair. Practicing integrity under pressure So, what can you do? What has been helpful for me and the people I work with in my practice of developing leaders with integrity, is to create opportunities to put yourself under pressure. This could be doing something youre not sure you will be any good at or something that makes you cringe—and doing it anyway. In this environment, your body will produce adrenaline, which will create a fight or flight response. This feeling is perfect for finding out what  really matters to you when push comes to shove Then spend some time reflecting on what happened, how you acted, and how you felt. Think about your decisions in light of what you consider to be your values. And ask yourself whether you are really being honest with yourself about why you do what you do. Or, are you telling yourself stories to justify your actions? Think about your decisions in light of what you consider to be your values. Banning Harry Potter Impedes Upon Our Rights Muggles, Quidditch, and Hermoine. Do any of these words look familiar to you? If you are over the age of 11 then probably not these three words come from the Harry Potter book series. Muggles are non-magic people, quidditch is a ball game, and Hermoine is a young wizard and one of the main characters of the Potter series. I know these things because I have had the chance to read these wonderfully imaginative books. The piece I decided to analyze is the famous sculpture, Laocoà ¶n and his two sons. I decided on this particular piece for a few reasons, one being the emotion we see on the subjects’ faces, and the other being the importance for future art. When I began this research I could not have possibly understood the relevance this piece had on the art that was yet to come. The Hellenistic period of Greek art spans from the time of Alexander the Great’s death in 323 to 30 B.C.E. (â€Å"Hellenistic Period† 1). However there have been controversies of precisely how long the Hellenistic period lasted. Some argue that from C. 400; to the first century can be classified as â€Å"Pre-Hellenistic† (Janson 138-139). â€Å"Hellenistic, is a term meant to convey the†¦show more content†¦But in 1905 the archeologist, Ludwig Pollack, discovered the original right arm of Laocoà ¶n and it was reconstructed in 1957-60 (â€Å"The Vatican† 185). The style of th is sculpture is immediately classified as Hellenistic, because of the motion on the bodies of Laocoà ¶n and his sons. The agony on their faces portrays the anguish they were feeling at the time of their death, and the bulging muscles, and veins stick out as they try to free themselves of the snakes. The legend says that Laocoà ¶n was a Trojan priest of Apollo. The Greeks who had been trying to sack the city of Troy for years were unsuccessful, and devised a new plan. They created the Trojan horse to offer the city of Troy as a promise to stop the fighting. Laocoà ¶n saw that this was a trap and tried to warn his fellow Trojans of the danger. When he approached the alter of Poseidon to pray, the Gods Athena and Poseidon depending on which version you read, favored the Greeks and decided to punish Laocoà ¶n for his treachery by sending two giant snakes to kill him and his sons. However, there was one Trojan who heeded the warning, his name was Aeneas. Aeneas, fled Troy and this e ventually led to the founding of Rome (â€Å"Musei Vaticani – sito ufficiale†). Much of his writing was drawn from the history of the South and of his family. Howe writes, the extraordinary growth of the books to come will arise from his discovery of his native insight: the Southern memory, the Southern myth, the Southern reality. Faulkner was, after all, unique. There has been no other quite like him. He seemed to see the world in a new way forever, as Howe points out. Never satisfied with the familiar and well-worn, Howe writes that Faulkner did something that no other writer except James Joyce has been able to do when he exploited the stream-of-consciousness technique. But, Faulkners approach to literature was tragic, as he explored the cost and heavy the weight of human existence. Sacrifice may be the key to salvation for those who stand ready to bear the cost and suffer the weight. Perhaps, it was only that Faulkner was able to see true cost.

An Element Of Art And Science Essay Astrology provides a very debatable kind of knowledge that is generally assessed by the intelligent as a useless kind of knowledge, which only makes sense for the ignorant. At the same time astrology is usually associated with gypsies and hucksters, who are known for their deceptive and fake knowledge, as they try to deceive people for their own financial interest. On the other hand, we find people with high education attempting to study astrology and very much respect the kind of knowledge it offers them. Whether such knowledge offered through teaching astrology in universities is worth doing or to be considered an inapplicable knowledge for high education is a critical decision to make, which requires obtaining a great insight about astrology it self as an academic field in order to be able to make a correct assessment. Astrology is actually a combined form of knowledge that both combine both the element of art and of science in its essence. It contains the mathematical element as well as the artistic element o symbolism (Astrology 891). Scientists usually disregard the art side of astrology and focus on the basic mathematical part of it, as they judge it as useless and insignificant. This actually destroys the wholeness and balance within the realm itself. This may be considered a reason for misunderstanding the real value of knowledge in astrology. It is also a fact that every field is vulnerable to be used by ignorant people who devoid it totally of its meaning and value, in order to sell it as cheap as possible in a market of ignorance that unfortunately have many customers who are wiling to buy, again this helps in misunderstanding Astrology (Astrology 891); and as there is the presence of the competent and the incompetent in every field, and people usually search for the best in every profession, so why exclude Astrology (Astrology 896). Astrology requires a sophisticated kind of thinking as it combines artistic and scientific knowledge, it can therefore never be considered as insignificant knowledge. It may not be appreciated by scientists due to the artistic element provided within it, and their total dependence on reason for discovering reality since the onset of the renaissance; thus reviving such forms of knowledge actually, shows the evolution of knowledge and thinking that reflects the significance of intuitive forms of knowledge besides the pure rational ones. The astrological knowledge in itself consists of a natural balance between intuitive and rational knowledge, and disturbing this balance will only lead to the production of inconsistent forms of knowledge that seem to appear on the surface to help in the generation of misunderstandings regarding astrology. The argument of scientists against Astrology reflects the on going disagreement between scientific knowledge and intuitive forms of knowledge. Scientists never admit the truth in any intuitive understanding, and they usually regarded as invalid. They never accept the fact the mystery is part of reality and that the rational mind can never be able to reach full understanding of the universe. Astrology is a balanced kind of knowledge as it respects both forms of thinking, which in fact a respect for nature and for the human being as part of that nature. Human beings as well as nature are made of matter and soul that can never be detached from each other as long as life is there. How can scientists reach the truth if they are actually altering the natural balance in life by looking for material proof and ignoring the intuitive reality of nature? The soul remains a mystery that can never be explained by scientific truth, and science can not resolve the question of life and death. There fore, accepting astrology as a significant form of knowledge by a scientist is truly a question of him admitting intuition as a part of reality. In the case of a scientist who puts great emphasis on logic and excludes intuition, makes him a rough and rigid person who stands weak in front of the scientifically unexplained mysteries of the world; while in the case of the ignorant who does the opposite to give too much significance to intuition and disregards reason suffers another kind of weakness that creates a dependent and shattered personality. But again we must also admit that this would be the case with any field if wrongly interpreted. All in all, I believe that Astrology is a sophisticated form of knowledge that should be respected for the special thinking abilities it provides an individual who studies it. It also reflects on the importance of providing a balance between Art and Science, and thus between logic and intuition, which is found deep within the nature of man and the universe he lives in. I would very strongly recommend all institutions of high education to teach Astrology in order to correct the misunderstanding entitled to it, and thus expose the rich and deep knowledge it provides.
